Delete your account

You can delete your PreviewPal account whenever you like, from the app or from any web browser. Here's how, and what happens to your data.

01Delete it yourself

  1. Sign in to PreviewPal, in the app or at previewpal.io in any web browser.
  2. Open Settings. On a phone, tap More at the bottom of the screen, then Settings. On a computer, choose Profile in the menu on the left, then the gear button at the top of your profile.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.
  4. Type your password to confirm (if you sign in with Google, it's the password you chose when you set up PreviewPal), then tap Yes, delete my account. It happens straight away.

02If you can't sign in

Forgotten your password? Choose Forgot password? on the sign-in page and we'll email you a link to set a new one. Then follow the steps above. You don't need your recovery code to delete your account.

03What's deleted

Your profile (name, bio, interests, picture and location), drafts, templates, notifications (yours, and the ones your penpals got about you), sign-in links, mood readings and scores, bottles, your Meet history and your answer to its age question, your password hash and both locked copies of your encryption key, plus photos and photo stamps that no letter uses (except any our safety team took down, below). Your email address is freed, so it can be used for a new account. If you pay for Premium, the subscription is cancelled at the same time, and nothing more is charged.

04What stays, and for how long

  • Letters you've already exchanged stay in your penpals' history, still end-to-end encrypted, shown as from "[Deleted]", along with the photos and audio in them and their postmarks (the city and country each was posted from and delivered to, and those places rounded to about 11 km).
  • Reports you made, or that were made about you (including any letter text a penpal chose to share with a report), stay with our safety team so we can act on abuse.
  • A record of what you bought (the item, the amount and the date) is kept by us and by Stripe for as long as tax and accounting rules require.
  • If an account was banned for good, a one-way hash of its email address, and its Google or Facebook account ID, are kept so they can't be used to sign up again.
  • If reports about you were still open when you deleted your account, the same hash and ID are kept for up to 180 days, so our safety team can still ban the account. They're dropped as soon as the team decides not to.
  • Photos or audio our safety team took down for breaking our rules are kept out of sight, with a record of whose they were, for as long as the law requires (at least a year if they're reported to the authorities, such as child abuse material).
